About Me

Dr. Erika Solis (they/them) is an Assistant Professor of Communication at Alfred State College. They've taught communication-oriented courses, focused both on written and verbal communication, including Interpersonal Communication, Technical Writing, and Interactive Narratives. Prior to teaching at Alfred State College, Erika taught courses covering the video game industry, mass communication law, digital media metrics, and the dynamics of communication at Penn State University and Union College of New Jersey.

Erika's research broadly explores the video game industry and its usage of monetization tactics, as well as children's online usage. Their interests take critical-cultural perspectives on the current children's privacy landscape and problems within the video game industry. They've presented 15+ research projects at multiple conferences, including ICA, NCA, UDC, and TPRC. Their dissertation focused on the political economy of video game microtransactions, something that has guided their interests ever since.
